Why Configuration Is as Important as Hardware Choice
A Fronius GEN24 or Sungrow SH hybrid inverter running on factory defaults is not a fully optimised Cyprus installation. The EAC grid has specific voltage and frequency windows, export limits that vary by tariff class, and net metering commissioning requirements that must be reflected in your inverter's settings. A misconfigured system exports when it should store, trips during summer heat events, or delivers less to net metering than it could. This guide covers every setting that matters for Limassol, Nicosia, Paphos, and Larnaca installations.
EAC Grid Parameters Cyprus Inverters Must Honour
All grid-connected inverters in Cyprus must operate within the parameters defined by EAC's technical connection requirements (aligned with EN 50549-1 for LV systems). Key values your commissioning technician should verify:
| Parameter | EAC Requirement |
|---|---|
| Nominal voltage | 230 V (±10%) → 207–253 V operating range |
| Over-voltage trip (fast) | 264 V within 0.2 s |
| Under-voltage trip | 195 V within 1.5 s |
| Nominal frequency | 50 Hz |
| Over-frequency trip | 51 Hz within 0.5 s |
| Under-frequency trip | 47 Hz within 3 s |
| Anti-islanding | Active frequency shift or ROCOF ≤ 1 Hz/s |
All Fronius, SolarEdge, Sungrow, Huawei, and Deye inverter models approved for the Cyprus market ship with these parameters set as defaults — but always verify them in the commissioning report.
MPPT Configuration for Cyprus Rooftops
Multiple-MPPT inverters (Sungrow SH, Fronius GEN24, Huawei SUN2000) must be strung correctly to extract maximum yield from Cyprus's high-irradiance climate.
String Length and Voltage Window
Cyprus has wide seasonal temperature swings — panel open-circuit voltage (Voc) is highest on cold winter mornings (cell temperature ~5°C) and lowest on hot summer afternoons (cell temperature 65–70°C). Your string must stay within the inverter's MPPT voltage window under both extremes.
Formula for maximum string length (cold voltage check):
→ Before you read on — see what payback looks like for your roof in under a minute.
Voc_string_cold = Panel Voc × Correction factor at 5°C × Number of panels
Must be ≤ Inverter max DC input voltage (typically 600 V or 1,000 V)
Example: A Sungrow SH10RT with 1,000 V max DC input, paired with 440 W panels (Voc = 37.5 V, temp coefficient -0.27%/°C):
- Correction at 5°C (20°C below STC): 37.5 × (1 + 0.0027 × 20) = 37.5 × 1.054 = 39.5 V per panel
- Maximum safe string: 1,000 ÷ 39.5 = 25 panels
- Typical Cyprus string design: 14–18 panels per MPPT input
Dual-MPPT Settings for East-West Roofs
For Cyprus homes with east-west ridge orientation (common in Limassol and Nicosia suburbs), configure each MPPT independently:
- MPPT 1: East-facing panels (morning peak)
- MPPT 2: West-facing panels (afternoon peak)
Do not mix east and west strings on the same MPPT — the inverter will limit both to the lower of the two string voltages, losing generation from whichever side is shaded.
Export Limit Settings for Net Metering
Under EAC's net metering scheme, residential systems export surplus generation to the grid at the fixed credit rate (approximately €0.10/kWh in 2026). Export is unlimited for systems up to 10 kWp. For larger systems, EAC may impose a specific export limit that must be programmed into the inverter.
How to Set Export Limits
Fronius GEN24: Navigate to Settings → Grid Codes → Cyprus → Export Power Limit. Enter the value in watts. Enable "Soft Limit" to ramp export smoothly rather than abruptly.
Sungrow SH series: In iSolarCloud: Plant Management → Settings → Export Power Setting. Available in watts or as a percentage of inverter rated output.
SolarEdge Home Hub: Via the MySolarEdge installer portal under Site Settings → Grid Services → Export Limit.
For standard residential net metering in Cyprus, leave export limit at "unlimited" unless EAC's connection approval letter specifies otherwise.
Temperature Derating and Ventilation Settings
Cyprus summers push ambient temperatures to 38–40°C. Modern inverters derate output above a threshold ambient temperature — Fronius GEN24 derated above 40°C; Sungrow SH series above 45°C. To minimise derating:
- Mount the inverter on a north-facing shaded wall, not a south-facing wall or direct sun exposure
- Leave at least 200 mm clearance above and below the unit for convective airflow
- Set the fan speed mode (where available) to "Auto" or "High" for summer operation — do not disable the cooling fan to reduce noise
- In iSolarCloud and Solar.web, enable temperature logging to spot patterns where derating coincides with midday peak generation
Battery Charge/Discharge Schedule for Cyprus
For hybrid systems with a battery (BYD HV, Pylontech Force, Sonnen Eco), configure charge schedules to align with EAC's net metering economics:
Recommended Schedule (Summer — June to August)
| Time | Action | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| 07:00–10:00 | Charge battery from solar | Capture morning ramp-up |
| 10:00–15:00 | Self-consume solar, export surplus | Peak generation hours |
| 15:00–18:00 | Charge battery from solar surplus | Build reserve for evening |
| 18:00–23:00 | Discharge battery to home loads | Avoid EAC import charges |
| 23:00–07:00 | Idle (no grid charging) | EAC single-rate tariff, no benefit |
Recommended Schedule (Winter — November to February)
In winter, solar generation is lower. Set the battery reserve to a minimum 20% to maintain a backup capacity, and allow the battery to charge from any solar surplus from 09:00–15:00.
→ Numbers speak louder: calculate your annual solar return and take the guesswork out.
Commissioning Checklist for Cyprus Installers
Before handing over a Cyprus system to the homeowner:
- EAC grid parameters verified against commissioning report
- String Voc within max DC input range at both temperature extremes
- Dual MPPT strings correctly assigned for roof orientation
- Export limit set per EAC connection approval letter
- Anti-islanding test passed (confirmed in commissioning report)
- Battery charge/discharge schedule programmed and tested
- Monitoring platform (iSolarCloud, Solar.web, MySolarEdge, FusionSolar) live and login provided to homeowner
- Fan and thermal management settings confirmed for Mediterranean operation
Compare your system's first month of monitoring data against the installer's yield estimate. If generation falls more than 8% below the PVGIS projection for the same period, contact your installer to review the MPPT configuration. Use the /cy/compare tool on Comparisun to benchmark your system against similar-sized installations in your city.
