Before the Scaffolding Goes Up
A typical residential solar installation in Cyprus spans about four weeks from signed contract to live system β but only four of those days involve work on your roof. The rest is paperwork, approvals, and logistics. Understanding each stage prevents surprises and helps you hold your installer to account.
Stage 1: Site Survey and System Design (Days 1β3 before install)
Every reputable installer begins with an on-site survey. A surveyor visits your property to:
- Measure usable roof area and record orientation and pitch
- Check structural condition of the roof and rafters (flat concrete roofs and traditional clay-tile roofs each require different mounting systems)
- Assess shading from trees, aerials, water heaters, and neighbouring buildings
- Inspect your main distribution board and available space for the inverter
- Review your EAC electricity bills to model realistic yield and savings
From this data, the installer produces a system design with panel layout, inverter specification, and an estimated annual yield in kWh. Ask to see the PVGIS simulation report β this is the EU's publicly available irradiance tool and any serious installer uses it for Cyprus sites.

Stage 2: MECI Permit and EAC Pre-Approval (Weeks 1β3)
For systems up to 10 kWp, Cyprus regulations require a building permit exemption notice submitted to the Cyprus Department of Town Planning and Housing. Your installer handles this, but you must sign the submission. Systems above 10 kWp require a full building permit, which extends the timeline.
Simultaneously, the installer submits a grid connection application to EAC. EAC checks your meter capacity and, if an upgrade is needed, schedules a meter replacement. In straightforward cases, EAC pre-approval returns within 10β15 working days.
Stage 3: The 4-Day Physical Installation
Once permits are in hand and materials are delivered, the installation crew arrives. Here is what each day typically covers:
Day 1: Roof Mounting Structure
- For tiled roofs: hook-and-rail mounting brackets are fitted through the tile by lifting individual tiles, drilling into the rafter, and sealing the penetration with EPDM gaskets
- For flat concrete roofs: aluminium ballast frames are positioned according to the design plan β no drilling required
- All rails are levelled and torqued to specification
- Takes: 1 full crew day
Day 2: Panel Installation
- Panels are craned or hand-lifted onto the roof
- Clipped and bonded to the mounting rails
- DC wiring between panels is routed through conduit to the edge of the roof
- For microinverter systems (Enphase IQ8), the microinverters are attached to each panel rail at this stage
- Takes: 1 full crew day for up to 20 panels
Day 3: Inverter, Wiring, and Electrical Work
- The string inverter or hybrid inverter is wall-mounted (ideally on a north-facing shaded wall)
- DC cables from the roof are connected to the inverter input
- AC output wiring runs from the inverter to a new solar circuit breaker in your distribution board
- If a battery is being installed, the battery cabinet is mounted and connected
- An energy meter or generation meter is fitted if required by EAC
- Takes: 1 full crew day
Day 4: Commissioning, Testing, and EAC Notification
- The installer powers up the system and runs commissioning checks per IEC 62446
- Inverter is configured for Cyprus grid parameters (230 V, 50 Hz, EAC export limit settings)
- Monitoring platform (SolarEdge MySolarEdge, Fronius Solar.web, Sungrow iSolarCloud) is configured on your phone
- Commissioning report is signed and submitted to EAC
- Your system begins generating β though it operates in a limited export mode until EAC activates net metering
Stage 4: EAC Net Metering Activation (2β4 Weeks After Installation)
EAC receives the commissioning report and schedules a meter inspection. In most cases they upgrade your existing meter to a bidirectional smart meter at no cost. Once installed, your account is switched to the net metering tariff and credits begin accumulating from the next billing cycle.
Stage 5: MECI Grant Completion
If you applied for a MECI grant before installation, you now submit your final documents: the installer's commissioning report, the EAC net metering confirmation letter, and the final invoice. Grant funds are typically disbursed within 60 days of submission.
