Why Your Choices at the Start Define Your Returns for 25 Years
Cyprus ranks among Europe's highest solar irradiance markets. A well-chosen 5 kWp rooftop system can generate over 8,000 kWh per year β enough to offset most of a typical household's EAC bill and, under net metering, bank credits for cloudy months. A poorly chosen system, however, degrades faster, fails silently, and eats into returns with costly repairs.
Before signing any contract, weigh these five factors carefully.
1. Panel Quality and Degradation Rate
Solar panels are rated by efficiency and by annual degradation β how much output they lose each year. Tier-1 manufacturers publish independent performance data and back their panels with a linear performance warranty.
What to look for:
- Annual degradation below 0.5 % (leading brands guarantee 0.35β0.4 %)
- At least 25-year linear performance warranty (not just a product warranty)
- IEC 61215 and IEC 61730 certifications on the datasheet
- Traceable manufacture β panels should not be rebranded generics
Brands commonly installed in Cyprus that meet these criteria include SolarEdge-optimised panels, Jinko, LONGi, and Trina at the mainstream tier.

2. Inverter Quality and Compatibility
The inverter converts DC power from your panels into AC power your home uses. It is also the most likely component to be replaced during the system's 25-year life.
String Inverters
SolarEdge, Fronius, and SMA are the three most widely serviced brands in Cyprus. All carry a 10-year standard warranty, extendable to 20 or 25 years. Fronius and SMA have European manufacturing and strong local distribution.
Microinverters
Enphase IQ8 microinverters suit shaded or complex roofs. Each panel operates independently, so partial shading does not drag down the whole array. Warranty is 25 years.
Hybrid Inverters
If you plan to add a battery β Tesla Powerwall, BYD, Sonnen, or Pylontech β choose an inverter that is battery-ready from the start. Deye and Sungrow both offer hybrid models that pair with multiple battery brands and are sold by multiple Cypriot installers.
3. Installer Credentials
In Cyprus, MECI (Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry) requires solar installers to hold a valid electrical contractor licence. Always verify:
- MECI-registered electrical contractor licence number
- Experience with systems similar in size and type to yours
- References from recent installations you can visit or call
- Whether the installer is the one doing the work β or sub-contracting
- Post-installation support: who do you call if something fails in year three?
A reputable installer will provide a written specification β panel model, inverter model, mounting system, cable gauge, and expected annual yield β before you sign.
4. Correct System Sizing
Oversizing wastes money. Undersizing leaves savings on the table. Sizing a Cyprus system correctly requires:
- Your last 12 months of EAC bills (annual kWh consumption)
- Your available roof area and its orientation
- Whether you have, or plan to add, an EV charger (Wallbox, Zaptec, or Easee are popular in Cyprus)
- Net metering rules: EAC allows export, but oversized systems may not recover costs within the grant window
A 5 kWp system suits a household consuming 6,000β8,000 kWh per year. A 10 kWp system suits higher-consuming homes or those charging an EV.
5. Monitoring
Monitoring lets you detect faults before they cost you months of lost generation. Every major inverter brand offers a cloud platform:
β Still unsure if the maths add up? Check your personal payback period β it takes 60 seconds.
| Brand | App | Real-time data? | Alert on fault? |
|---|---|---|---|
| SolarEdge | mySolarEdge | Yes | Yes |
| Enphase | Enlighten | Yes (per panel) | Yes |
| Fronius | Solar.web | Yes | Yes |
| Sungrow | iSolarCloud | Yes | Yes |
| Huawei | FusionSolar | Yes | Yes |
Confirm that your installer will register the system on the monitoring platform and hand you the login credentials at commissioning.
